The statement "Carried on deck without liability to the carrier for loss or damage, howsoever caused' or "Carried on deck at shipper's risk", or words to that effect, should appear on the face of the bill of lading.

A party to whom the bill of lading is transferred must be able to ascertain from the bill whether the goods are not being carried in the proper place, i. e. under-deck (where they will be covered by the Hague Rules or Hague-Visby Rules in the event of a claim).
