Under the two sets of Merchant Shipping (Passenger Ship Construction) Regulations, passenger ships of Classes I to VI(A) drills for practising the closing of watertight doors, deadlights, scuppers, ash-shoots, rubbish-shoots and similar devices must be held "as required".

 Inspections must be made every 7 days or less of all watertight doors and mechanisms, indicators and warning devices connected with same, the closing of which is necessary to make watertight any compartment below the margin line, and valves the operation of which is necessary for the efficient operation of damage-control cross-connections.
