What is the Standard Scale of Fines, and what is its purpose?

MCA Oral Exam Questions

A scale of fines laid down by section 37 of the Criminal Justice Act 1982, as amended, consisting of five levels which each equate to a monetary amount.

The amounts can be amended periodically by one piece of primary legislation applying to all secondary legislation providing for a fine on the Standard Scale. This saves the expense, time and complexity of amending numerous separate pieces of legislation that provide for fines of specified sums, as many old SIs did. (The corresponding primary legislation in Scotland is the Criminal Procedure (Scotland) Act 1975.)
