The MCA is an executive agency of the Department for Transport (DfT). It works to prevent the loss of life on the coasts and at sea, and implements the government's maritime, safety policy in the UK. The Coastguard provides a 24-hour maritime search and rescue service around the UK coast. MCA inspects ships to ensure they meet safety rules, certifies seafarers, registers vessels and is responsible for coordinating responses to pollution from shipping and offshore installations.
