FAC (Fast as can)

FAC (Fast as can). This term in a charterparty can apply to the vessel’s being loaded or discharged as quickly as is practical, possibly in relation to the custom of the part (COP) or “with customary quick despatch”.

This can be the responsibility of the Charterer, to ensure that the cargo handling facilities permit the ship to be loaded or discharged in this manner. It can also apply to the owner’s responsibility to receive or discharge the cargo. The term appears in a charterparty when the laytime is not fixed. “As fast as (the ship) can (receive) (or deliver)” means that the laytime is calculated by reference to the maximum rate at which the ship in full working order is capable of loading or discharging the cargo.
